Why Values Aren’t Working

At the age of 38 I would have told you that I was living a good and principled life marked by community, humor and service. I was in a good place. And then I wasn’t. I was let go from my job and really confused about what I was going to do.

A common (and usually unspoken) expectation in the workplace is that we should “check emotions at the door.” This norm creates a series of rippling effects – increased stress, detachment, and slipping trust. Organizations are suffering, along with the humans inside of them.

For a long time, I assumed courage was reserved for comic books and activists. Conveniently, this assumption moved courage out of my reach and responsibility. The call to bravery and courage given only to the elite chosen few. After leading hundreds of people through the Dare to Lead™ program, I know I am not unique in this assumption. It is a hardwired belief for many. This belief, however, is wrong.
